DOLBY ATMOS India's First Theatre in Chennai @ Sathyam

Dolby Laboratories has launched its cutting edge Atmos technology in India, with the Sathyam Multiplex in Chennai. Dolby Atmos uses an array of speakers to create a realistic, object oriented sound field. A remastered 3D version of AVM's 2007 Tamil blockbuster Sivaji will be the first Indian movie to be released with Atmos. Atmos gives sound designers a never before level of creative control while ensuring that the audience, whichever theatre they might be watching the movie in, gets the full impact of the audio effects. Dolby Laboratories India country manager Pankaj Kedia said Atmos is an end-to-end audio solution that goes beyond the traditional channel-based systems. "Atmos addresses every single speaker in the cinema and this is a significant enhancement from the point of view of content creation. The resultant sound is natural and neat. This makes the overall experience more immersive for the viewer. You have not heard sound like this before," he said. The new system can have up to 64 speakers, even on the ceiling, and cater to 128 simultaneous sound streams, thus allowing sound to be moved across the theatre. Plus, Atmos renders sound specifically for all kinds of cinemas, so that producers don't have to create different masters for various theatre configurations.

European Commission to consult over digital cinema

The European Commission is launching a consultation into the digital cinema sector as it warns that one in three European cinemas could face closure.

The consultation will invite film exhibitors, distributors, film agencies, advertisers and public film organisations to discuss the future of the industry.

The two-month consultation will form part of the Commission's policy on digital cinema and will also be the basis of its communication on "Opportunities and challenges for European cinema in the digital era" in 2010.

It warned that, while digital cinema can make distribution cheaper and enable more European films to be accessed abroad, unless a new business model and public support schemes are developed, a third of European cinemas could face closure.

The US leads the way in digital cinema, where it is available in 90% of all new films, whereas in France - Europe's biggest film producer - less than half of new films are available on digital.

In Europe, only 2,428 screens have been converted to digital. Worldwide, around 12,000 screens have been digitally equipped out of a total of about 110,000. By 2012, it is estimated that nearly 20% of cinemas worldwide will be converted to digital.

QSC Announces the DCS SB-15121: the Highest Output Cinema Subwoofer

Joining QSC Audio’s DCS Digital Cinema Speaker family, the new SB-15121 subwoofer offers the highest performance available in a dedicated cinema subwoofer enclosure. It has been designed for use in premiere cinemas and post-production applications where the ultimate in performance is required.

The massive 1500W, 21-inch low-frequency transducer features a 6-inch diameter voice coil in a vented, neodymium magnet structure that is designed to dissipate extreme amounts of heat and allow for excursion that is double that of typical 18-inch transducers. This ensures cool operation, even at high power levels, increases driver lifespan and decreases power compression at high drive levels.

The large, ported enclosure ensures response to the lowest audible frequency for bass cannot only be heard but also feel. In fact the frequency range extends to below 25Hz without the need for B6 EQ filters.

Top 10 Ways to Unblock Websites

How to unblock websites? These days, Internet filtering and controlled access is the new trend. More business owners are implementing filters within their companies with the purpose of blocking websites. Their intention is understandable but, on the other side, people love freedom and sometimes they feel mistreated. However, here are some things you can do that will help you bypass filters and unblock websites.

1. Use web proxies.
Many free online services allow you to access blocked websites through a proxy server. A proxy server is an intermediary between the user and the server where the request was send. Here is a list with the most known resources of web proxies: Proxy.org, HideMyAss.com, Kortaz.com, KProxy.com and Anonymouse.org

2. Use VPN connections.
A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is like a tunnel over the public network. The advantage of using VPNs over web proxies is that VPNs are more secure because they are using advanced encryption and allow you to access all the applications (mail, chat, browser etc) in complete anonymity and not only the web sites. The most known free VPN is Hotspot Shield.

3. Use Hide IP software.
These are easy to use and even if the main functionality is to hide IP address and unblock websites, there are applications that can provide you more than that – like cleaning online tracks, testing proxies, manually adding proxy etc. Usually if you choose a free software, then this will provide you a minimal number of proxies and no other features than hiding IP address. Not My IP is one of the latest free hide IP address software that has already gained a large market followed by the old UltraSurf which is already very popular. Regarding paid applications that provide more features and have a complex structure, my recommendations are IP Privacy and Hide My IP.

4. Use Toolbars and Firefox add-ons.
Toolbars and Firefox add-ons are in fact software applications that work on specific browsers and with a simple click you can enable or disable online anonymity.

5. Use translation services.
Introduce the link of the blocked website in the translation field (for example in Google Translator) and choose a random language to translate from because translation from English to English is not supported.

6. Use Google cache.
In the Google search field type cache: before the URL of the blocked website. For example type cache:http:/ /www.domain. com

7. Use Internet Archive.
Internet Archive allows you to view blocked websites through the Wayback Machine. This will retrieve all pages of a specific website indifferent if the website is blocked.

8. Use Web2Mail service.
Web2Mail it is a free email service that can sent to your email address specific web pages. You sign up for an account and get set to receive specific websites by email.

9. Change the http of an URL into https
This is the easiest way to access blocked websites. Of course, this might not work every time but you have many other solutions also. This is the fastest one.

10. Use IP address of the website instead of URL.
To use the IP address of a website instead of URL, you must first find its IP. To do this open command prompt and type: “ping domain.com”.

Qube Excels as Digital Cinema Partner at 66th Venice International Film Festival

Qube XP-D servers equip all screens at the Venice Lido
Qube Cinema is pleased to announce that its exclusive partnership with the 66th Venice International Film Festival was, again, a major success. Qube was the official digital cinema server and digital cinema mastering equipment supplier for the second consecutive year. The festival, organized by La Biennale di Venezia, took place at the Venice Lido from September 2 to September 12, 2009.

Qube Cinema digitally equipped all seven screens at the venue along with local Qube distributor, D2. In collaboration with the projector partner, Qube Cinema/D2 provided all the necessary equipment and technical support to ensure successful DCI JPEG2000 digital cinema playback during the festival.

Over 300 hours of digital cinema content was projected using the Qube XP-D digital cinema server, including stereoscopic 3D content, as a part of the Festivals program and also at this years SMPTE day. Qube Cinema also mastered on-site, from a number of sources using the powerful and flexible QubeMaster Pro application.

The Qube XP-D digital cinema server, which was used to equip the screens, is a popular choice across the world. Powerful, reliable and cost-effective, the Qube XP-D plays multiple formats including JPEG2000, MPEG-2 and VC1 within the same Show.

Qube Cinema also showcased QubeMaster Pro again this year. Rapidly becoming an industry standard for DCI JPEG2000 DCP creation, QubeMaster Pro is used by some of the leading companies in the industry including Sony Pictures, Dreamworks, Technicolor, IMAX, Arts Alliance and Arri.

IDC wins new German digital cinema order

International Datacasting Corp. (TSX:IDC) has received an order from a new German customer that will be using IDC's satellite network equipment for a digital cinema service rollout in Europe, the company announced Wednesday.

Ottawa-based IDC said Media Broadcast GmbH has ordered its SuperFlex DVB-S2 broadband satellite caching receiver, the SFX4104 Pro Video multimedia satellite and Datacast XD content management and distribution software for movie delivery.

"We are very pleased to have been selected by Media Broadcast for their operational rollout. They have been evaluating our technology as part of their initial system deployment for over a year now and our ability to meet their very exacting standards for quality and performance is a testament to the solutions we have developed for digital cinema applications," said IDC chief executive Ron Clifton in a statement.

The equipment will expand Media Broadcast's service by providing high-speed secure delivery of large movie files as well as live alternative content in 2D or 3D format.

GDC's SA-2100 Digital Servers are 4 K ready

GDC a worldwide digital cinema provider has announced that their SA-2100 servers are 4K ready.GDC is pleased to announce that it is developing a 4K Media Block which will be compatible with the new generation of 4K chip being developed by Texas Instruments. The new product will extend the capabilities of GDC’s SA-2100 line of digital cinema servers and is timed to be ready when 4K capable DLP Cinema projectors become available.

GDC was the first digital cinema server manufacturer to show 4K capability as early as in 2004. This early version of GDC’s 4K servers was used in demonstrations with Sony 4K digital cinema projectors using SXRD technology in China, Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea and Hong Kong from 2004 to 2005. These early 4K demonstrations with Sony clearly showed that GDC’s state-of-the-art SA-2100 servers were already architected to support full 4K content and bandwidth requirements at that time.

The scalable architecture in GDC’s SA-2100 servers allows GDC to offer a seamless transition to 4K without any changes in the screen and theatre management infrastructure. More importantly, GDC’s 4K capable digital cinema technology will retain all its existing advanced features such as:

- Instant import of data drives – allows instant transfer of data drives (i.e. HDD) from one SA-2100 to another, making it possible to move a movie quickly from one screen to another. The entire movie (data) transfer process can be completed within a few minutes.

- Instant playback from any CRU drive on the SA-2100A for emergency – allows content received on a CRU Dataport drive to play back directly from the drive without ingesting. This is useful in emergency situations where the theatre receives content at the last minute.

- Instant playback of content held on the GDC TMS (Theatre Management System) for emergency – allows content residing on the TMS to play back directly through streaming from the TMS without ingesting at the screen server.

- Built-in RealD’s 3D EQ (aka ‘ghostbuster’) technology – RealD’s 3D EQ technology augments the separation of the left and right eye images, providing the best 3D visual experience.

- Closed Captioning capability – facilitates greater access to motion pictures by displaying closed captions from DCPs on WGBH’s Rear Window Captioning devices.

IS Mumbai, the capital of digital cinema ?

Cinema-watching is attaining world standards in Mumbai, with the city emerging as the D-cinema capital of the country.
Fifty-eight of the 95 digitally-enabled screens in the country are in Mumbai and Vashi. Trade insiders say these digital screens are the best bet considering 3-D cinema is fast becoming

a worldwide preoccupation. So what is digital cinema? Well, D-cinema is essentially governed by Digital Cinema Initiative specifications. It has to be approved by an agency formed by Hollywood Studios' representatives, which has set its global standards.

The previous generation of cinema screens are E-cinema or electronic cinema. It is more widely available-you get it in more than 1,500 screens across India-and follows a specification and standards of its own. The main difference between D and E cinemas is that a D-cinema uses a 2K projector, which is more sophisticated, whereas an E-cinema uses the 1.92K or 1.3K projector, which is more cost-effective). This makes for a significant difference in viewing quality as well, say experts.

Mumbai can count itself as fortunate with its 58 D-cinemas as even Rashtrapati Bhavan is equipped with a mere E-cinema. On the other hand, at least two leading Mumbai industrialists-Mukesh Ambani and Kumar Mangalam Birla-reportedly have D-cinema equipment installed at their Mumbai residences.

UFO India has more than 1,250 theatres across India that beam E-cinema and it has its backers. Rajesh Mishra of UFO says, "Premium Hindi and regional movies have their first-day, first-show releases on UFO and the cream of Bollywood continues to pledge support to this format."

But Mumbai theatre owners say India is the only country where E-cinema actually exists. It made its presence felt earlier than D-cinema did. And it is also a comparatively cost-effective medium. Scrabble Entertainment CEO Ranjit Thakur, says, "DCI mostly pays attention to security and quality of content. 2K to cinema is like high-definition to television. The security on D-cinema is more than an ATM banking transaction. That's because half the password is embedded in the server itself; so a content meant for a particular screen will not work on any other screen even if the pirate gets hold of the password and the hard drive together. This is why no Hollywood studio will ever offer its content to be played back on a non-DCI platform."

High-end multiplexes have opted for D-cinema because 3-D movies will dominate the future. PVR Cinema CEO Amitabh Vardhan said digital was a "natural step" for the firm as it wanted to give its patrons the best movie-going experience. "We now have 26 digital screens in India and will soon roll out our next digital phase, adding 30 more screens on an almost immediate basis. Digital technology is here to stay. Do any of you ever use film any more for your cameras?"

Reliance name to replace Adlabs

One of the most famous names in Indian cinema, Adlabs Films is to disappear when the company is rebranded Reliance Mediaworks.

The move reflects the company's takeover by Reliance ADA Group in 2005 as well as the expansion of its range of activities.

From being the largest film processing company in India, it has expanded into film exhibition in India and abroad, digital post-production, digital cinema mastering, studios/shooting facilities, equipment rentals, visual effects and image enhancement and film restoration. It is outright owner of L,A.-based Lowry Digital.

"The name Reliance MediaWorks Limited more accurately reflects our identity as a diversified film and media services company with a global presence," said Anil Arjun, CEO in a filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange, where the company is the only listed unit of the Reliance Entertainment group.

Parts of Adlabs' operations have already been rebranded including the TV business Big Synergy and the multiplexes which are known as Big Cinemas.

Separately, celebrated ad executive and scriptwriter Prasoon Joshi has been appointed director of the company, replacing Pradeep Shah. Joshi has been an advisor to the company for over a year
