European Commission to consult over digital cinema

The European Commission is launching a consultation into the digital cinema sector as it warns that one in three European cinemas could face closure.

The consultation will invite film exhibitors, distributors, film agencies, advertisers and public film organisations to discuss the future of the industry.

The two-month consultation will form part of the Commission's policy on digital cinema and will also be the basis of its communication on "Opportunities and challenges for European cinema in the digital era" in 2010.

It warned that, while digital cinema can make distribution cheaper and enable more European films to be accessed abroad, unless a new business model and public support schemes are developed, a third of European cinemas could face closure.

The US leads the way in digital cinema, where it is available in 90% of all new films, whereas in France - Europe's biggest film producer - less than half of new films are available on digital.

In Europe, only 2,428 screens have been converted to digital. Worldwide, around 12,000 screens have been digitally equipped out of a total of about 110,000. By 2012, it is estimated that nearly 20% of cinemas worldwide will be converted to digital.

QSC Announces the DCS SB-15121: the Highest Output Cinema Subwoofer

Joining QSC Audio’s DCS Digital Cinema Speaker family, the new SB-15121 subwoofer offers the highest performance available in a dedicated cinema subwoofer enclosure. It has been designed for use in premiere cinemas and post-production applications where the ultimate in performance is required.

The massive 1500W, 21-inch low-frequency transducer features a 6-inch diameter voice coil in a vented, neodymium magnet structure that is designed to dissipate extreme amounts of heat and allow for excursion that is double that of typical 18-inch transducers. This ensures cool operation, even at high power levels, increases driver lifespan and decreases power compression at high drive levels.

The large, ported enclosure ensures response to the lowest audible frequency for bass cannot only be heard but also feel. In fact the frequency range extends to below 25Hz without the need for B6 EQ filters.

Top 10 Ways to Unblock Websites

How to unblock websites? These days, Internet filtering and controlled access is the new trend. More business owners are implementing filters within their companies with the purpose of blocking websites. Their intention is understandable but, on the other side, people love freedom and sometimes they feel mistreated. However, here are some things you can do that will help you bypass filters and unblock websites.

1. Use web proxies.
Many free online services allow you to access blocked websites through a proxy server. A proxy server is an intermediary between the user and the server where the request was send. Here is a list with the most known resources of web proxies: Proxy.org, HideMyAss.com, Kortaz.com, KProxy.com and Anonymouse.org

2. Use VPN connections.
A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is like a tunnel over the public network. The advantage of using VPNs over web proxies is that VPNs are more secure because they are using advanced encryption and allow you to access all the applications (mail, chat, browser etc) in complete anonymity and not only the web sites. The most known free VPN is Hotspot Shield.

3. Use Hide IP software.
These are easy to use and even if the main functionality is to hide IP address and unblock websites, there are applications that can provide you more than that – like cleaning online tracks, testing proxies, manually adding proxy etc. Usually if you choose a free software, then this will provide you a minimal number of proxies and no other features than hiding IP address. Not My IP is one of the latest free hide IP address software that has already gained a large market followed by the old UltraSurf which is already very popular. Regarding paid applications that provide more features and have a complex structure, my recommendations are IP Privacy and Hide My IP.

4. Use Toolbars and Firefox add-ons.
Toolbars and Firefox add-ons are in fact software applications that work on specific browsers and with a simple click you can enable or disable online anonymity.

5. Use translation services.
Introduce the link of the blocked website in the translation field (for example in Google Translator) and choose a random language to translate from because translation from English to English is not supported.

6. Use Google cache.
In the Google search field type cache: before the URL of the blocked website. For example type cache:http:/ /www.domain. com

7. Use Internet Archive.
Internet Archive allows you to view blocked websites through the Wayback Machine. This will retrieve all pages of a specific website indifferent if the website is blocked.

8. Use Web2Mail service.
Web2Mail it is a free email service that can sent to your email address specific web pages. You sign up for an account and get set to receive specific websites by email.

9. Change the http of an URL into https
This is the easiest way to access blocked websites. Of course, this might not work every time but you have many other solutions also. This is the fastest one.

10. Use IP address of the website instead of URL.
To use the IP address of a website instead of URL, you must first find its IP. To do this open command prompt and type: “ping domain.com”.

Qube Excels as Digital Cinema Partner at 66th Venice International Film Festival

Qube XP-D servers equip all screens at the Venice Lido
Qube Cinema is pleased to announce that its exclusive partnership with the 66th Venice International Film Festival was, again, a major success. Qube was the official digital cinema server and digital cinema mastering equipment supplier for the second consecutive year. The festival, organized by La Biennale di Venezia, took place at the Venice Lido from September 2 to September 12, 2009.

Qube Cinema digitally equipped all seven screens at the venue along with local Qube distributor, D2. In collaboration with the projector partner, Qube Cinema/D2 provided all the necessary equipment and technical support to ensure successful DCI JPEG2000 digital cinema playback during the festival.

Over 300 hours of digital cinema content was projected using the Qube XP-D digital cinema server, including stereoscopic 3D content, as a part of the Festivals program and also at this years SMPTE day. Qube Cinema also mastered on-site, from a number of sources using the powerful and flexible QubeMaster Pro application.

The Qube XP-D digital cinema server, which was used to equip the screens, is a popular choice across the world. Powerful, reliable and cost-effective, the Qube XP-D plays multiple formats including JPEG2000, MPEG-2 and VC1 within the same Show.

Qube Cinema also showcased QubeMaster Pro again this year. Rapidly becoming an industry standard for DCI JPEG2000 DCP creation, QubeMaster Pro is used by some of the leading companies in the industry including Sony Pictures, Dreamworks, Technicolor, IMAX, Arts Alliance and Arri.

IDC wins new German digital cinema order

International Datacasting Corp. (TSX:IDC) has received an order from a new German customer that will be using IDC's satellite network equipment for a digital cinema service rollout in Europe, the company announced Wednesday.

Ottawa-based IDC said Media Broadcast GmbH has ordered its SuperFlex DVB-S2 broadband satellite caching receiver, the SFX4104 Pro Video multimedia satellite and Datacast XD content management and distribution software for movie delivery.

"We are very pleased to have been selected by Media Broadcast for their operational rollout. They have been evaluating our technology as part of their initial system deployment for over a year now and our ability to meet their very exacting standards for quality and performance is a testament to the solutions we have developed for digital cinema applications," said IDC chief executive Ron Clifton in a statement.

The equipment will expand Media Broadcast's service by providing high-speed secure delivery of large movie files as well as live alternative content in 2D or 3D format.

GDC's SA-2100 Digital Servers are 4 K ready

GDC a worldwide digital cinema provider has announced that their SA-2100 servers are 4K ready.GDC is pleased to announce that it is developing a 4K Media Block which will be compatible with the new generation of 4K chip being developed by Texas Instruments. The new product will extend the capabilities of GDC’s SA-2100 line of digital cinema servers and is timed to be ready when 4K capable DLP Cinema projectors become available.

GDC was the first digital cinema server manufacturer to show 4K capability as early as in 2004. This early version of GDC’s 4K servers was used in demonstrations with Sony 4K digital cinema projectors using SXRD technology in China, Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea and Hong Kong from 2004 to 2005. These early 4K demonstrations with Sony clearly showed that GDC’s state-of-the-art SA-2100 servers were already architected to support full 4K content and bandwidth requirements at that time.

The scalable architecture in GDC’s SA-2100 servers allows GDC to offer a seamless transition to 4K without any changes in the screen and theatre management infrastructure. More importantly, GDC’s 4K capable digital cinema technology will retain all its existing advanced features such as:

- Instant import of data drives – allows instant transfer of data drives (i.e. HDD) from one SA-2100 to another, making it possible to move a movie quickly from one screen to another. The entire movie (data) transfer process can be completed within a few minutes.

- Instant playback from any CRU drive on the SA-2100A for emergency – allows content received on a CRU Dataport drive to play back directly from the drive without ingesting. This is useful in emergency situations where the theatre receives content at the last minute.

- Instant playback of content held on the GDC TMS (Theatre Management System) for emergency – allows content residing on the TMS to play back directly through streaming from the TMS without ingesting at the screen server.

- Built-in RealD’s 3D EQ (aka ‘ghostbuster’) technology – RealD’s 3D EQ technology augments the separation of the left and right eye images, providing the best 3D visual experience.

- Closed Captioning capability – facilitates greater access to motion pictures by displaying closed captions from DCPs on WGBH’s Rear Window Captioning devices.

IS Mumbai, the capital of digital cinema ?

Cinema-watching is attaining world standards in Mumbai, with the city emerging as the D-cinema capital of the country.
Fifty-eight of the 95 digitally-enabled screens in the country are in Mumbai and Vashi. Trade insiders say these digital screens are the best bet considering 3-D cinema is fast becoming

a worldwide preoccupation. So what is digital cinema? Well, D-cinema is essentially governed by Digital Cinema Initiative specifications. It has to be approved by an agency formed by Hollywood Studios' representatives, which has set its global standards.

The previous generation of cinema screens are E-cinema or electronic cinema. It is more widely available-you get it in more than 1,500 screens across India-and follows a specification and standards of its own. The main difference between D and E cinemas is that a D-cinema uses a 2K projector, which is more sophisticated, whereas an E-cinema uses the 1.92K or 1.3K projector, which is more cost-effective). This makes for a significant difference in viewing quality as well, say experts.

Mumbai can count itself as fortunate with its 58 D-cinemas as even Rashtrapati Bhavan is equipped with a mere E-cinema. On the other hand, at least two leading Mumbai industrialists-Mukesh Ambani and Kumar Mangalam Birla-reportedly have D-cinema equipment installed at their Mumbai residences.

UFO India has more than 1,250 theatres across India that beam E-cinema and it has its backers. Rajesh Mishra of UFO says, "Premium Hindi and regional movies have their first-day, first-show releases on UFO and the cream of Bollywood continues to pledge support to this format."

But Mumbai theatre owners say India is the only country where E-cinema actually exists. It made its presence felt earlier than D-cinema did. And it is also a comparatively cost-effective medium. Scrabble Entertainment CEO Ranjit Thakur, says, "DCI mostly pays attention to security and quality of content. 2K to cinema is like high-definition to television. The security on D-cinema is more than an ATM banking transaction. That's because half the password is embedded in the server itself; so a content meant for a particular screen will not work on any other screen even if the pirate gets hold of the password and the hard drive together. This is why no Hollywood studio will ever offer its content to be played back on a non-DCI platform."

High-end multiplexes have opted for D-cinema because 3-D movies will dominate the future. PVR Cinema CEO Amitabh Vardhan said digital was a "natural step" for the firm as it wanted to give its patrons the best movie-going experience. "We now have 26 digital screens in India and will soon roll out our next digital phase, adding 30 more screens on an almost immediate basis. Digital technology is here to stay. Do any of you ever use film any more for your cameras?"

Reliance name to replace Adlabs

One of the most famous names in Indian cinema, Adlabs Films is to disappear when the company is rebranded Reliance Mediaworks.

The move reflects the company's takeover by Reliance ADA Group in 2005 as well as the expansion of its range of activities.

From being the largest film processing company in India, it has expanded into film exhibition in India and abroad, digital post-production, digital cinema mastering, studios/shooting facilities, equipment rentals, visual effects and image enhancement and film restoration. Parts of Adlabs' operations have already been rebranded including the TV business Big Synergy and the multiplexes which are known as Big Cinemas.

Separately, celebrated ad executive and scriptwriter Prasoon Joshi has been appointed director of the company, replacing Pradeep Shah. Joshi has been an advisor to the company for over a year

China’s largest commercial D-Cinema deployment

Time Antaeus Media Group, a Chinese digital cinema industry leader, has selected Christie as its partner for digital cinema deployment in China. This marks the country’s most extensive commercial effort to date, in which 800 Christie CP2000 series DLP Cinema® projectors will be installed into select cinemas by the end of 2010. These projectors will be installed together with 800 Time Antaeus’ Montage CDCS2000 D-Cinema Servers.

After conducting a series of extensive evaluations on the various solutions available, Time Antaeus opted for Christie’s CP2000 DLP Cinema projectors based on their image quality and reliability. With their excellent brightness, contrast, true colour reproduction and product integrity, the Christie CP2000 series projectors are widely popular among theatre operators and have won numerous positive reviews from the industry.

The collaboration between Christie and Time Antaeus began at the 2008 Beijing Summer Games’ ceremonies with the purchase of 120 Christie CP2000-ZX models. The CP2000-ZX digital cinema projectors delivered spectacular visuals throughout the event, demonstrating their full flexibility in a non-cinema environment. As part of the tailored digital cinema solution installed by CFG-Antaeus, the Montage CDCS2000 D-cinema server provided is a joint development between Time Antaeus and Doremi Cinema.
The pilot test of the 120 units of Christie CP2000 series digital cinema projectors and Time Antaeus’ Montage CDCS2000 D-cinema servers installed in the theatres across China proved to be a tremendous success. Since operation, they have experienced “zero” failure rates, offering users a high level of stability.

BLU-RAY BY SONY HOME CINEMA MADE SIMPLE

Sony is launching its most comprehensive range of Blu-ray home cinema systems, with a range of seven new models designed to suit the needs of everyone from the consumer wanting a fuss-free, compact set-up to those seeking the best possible performance in a package as simple to set-up as it is to use.

Three all-in-one systems headline the new range with features such as Full 1080p HD video, 1080p DVD upscaling, Virtual 7.1-channel -- filling the room with sound, not speakers -- and wireless rear speaker capability. Meanwhile four more packages combine Sony's superb BDP-S360 Blu-ray Disc(TM) player with surround sound systems combining style, simplicity and scintillating performance.

BDV-E300 and BDV-E800W: 1000W power and the latest Blu-ray Disc features

The BDV-E300 and BDV-E800W both offer 1000W of Sony's S-Master digital amplifier power. They also have the latest Blu-ray Disc features such as BD-Live for added content and features, 24p with x.v.Colour to let you see movies as the director intended, and Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA with Sony's Digital Cinema Sound for the most immersive movie experience.

The systems will also upscale your existing DVDs to near FullHD resolution, and have Sony's Virtual 7.1-channel sound for a complete wraparound audio experience without filling the room with speakers. Moreover, a real 7.1 set-up is also possible with the wireless upgrade kit WAHT-SBP1 which comes with an amplifier and two additional speakers.

The BDV-E300 from Sony uses five compact satellite speakers for the main channels and a powerful subwoofer, and offers wireless operation of the rear speakers with the addition of the WAHT-SA1 optional amplifier.

The BDV-E800W steps up with four floorstanding main speakers for front and rear left and right channels, the same high-power subwoofer, and wireless rear speakers as standard.*

And the systems are as simple to use as they are breathtaking in performance: Sony's BRAVIA Sync gives seamless operation of a complete Sony system with one remote handset, Digital Cinema Auto Calibration means the systems set themselves up to suit your room and even your listening position, and Sony's Digital Media Port allows the connection of iPod, Walkman® players, mobile phones and Bluetooth stereo devices allowing portable music and video to be streamed through the system to a TV.

BDV-Z7: surround made simple with just 2.1 speakers

The BDV-Z7 offers most of the facilities of the two surround sound systems above, but in a stylish and compact, 2.1-channel format creating great surround sound using Sony's S-Force Front Surround technology. This gives a virtual 5.1 surround sound experience without the need for rear speakers, and is perfect for smaller rooms where you want to keep the speaker-count to an absolute minimum.

With a 350W power output, BD-Live, 24p and x.v.Colour, Full HD video with the latest HD audio codecs, 1080p upscaling for DVDs, BRAVIA Sync and a Digital Media Port, this is a full-performance system in an ultra-compact form.

Four more systems based around the BDP-S360 Blu-ray Disc player

Sony's BDP-S360 Blu-ray Disc player is already attracting enthusiastic plaudits, and now there are four systems combining it with sleek amplification and speaker packages, for high-quality home cinema in a box. All offer the full range of features found in the 'all-in-one' systems above, but with even more flexibility, thanks to three HDMI inputs for extra AV sources and a wider choice of speaker systems.

The BDV-360FS is a 400W 2.1-channel system with S-Force Front Surround technology, while the BDV-360IS uses five of Sony's amazingly tiny 'golfball-sized' speakers to create a truly immersive surround sound experience.

The HTP-BD36SS is a 1000W, system using compact satellite speakers, and is wireless-ready, allowing cable-free operation of the rear speakers with an optional amplifier model, while the HTP-BD36SF takes the same concept and partners it with four floorstanding speakers for the front and rear left and right channels.

Environmental Info

Sony is engaged in a constant review of its manufacturing, operational and business practices to ensure that its products are developed in an environmentally responsible way. This approach can broadly be divided into three areas:

Product

-- All seven models consume only 0.3W in Standby mode.

-- Over 85% power efficiency of amplifier block is achieved with the full digital amplifier, S-Master.

Process

-- Halogenated materials can pose a risk to the environment if disposed of improperly. To minimize this risk, halogen-free flame retardants are used in certain printed wiring boards.

-- Corrugated cardboard is not used for the packaging cushions. Packaging cushions are made from paper.

Planet

Sony is determined to lead the way as a responsible manufacturer, and as a result we are focussing on three key areas of investment:

-- Reducing CO2 gas emissions

-- Increasing the percentage of renewable energy used in manufacturing facilities

-- Minimising the resources used by our factories in manufacturing

GDC Technology’s SA-2100 Digital Cinema Servers Are 4K Ready

GDC Technology (“GDC”), a world leading digital cinema solution provider, is pleased to announce that it is developing a 4K Media Block which will be compatible with the new generation of 4K chip being developed by Texas Instruments. The new product will extend the capabilities of GDC’s SA-2100 line of digital cinema servers and is timed to be ready when 4K capable DLP Cinema® projectors become available.

GDC was the first digital cinema server manufacturer to show 4K capability as early as in 2004. This early version of GDC’s 4K servers was used in demonstrations with Sony 4K digital cinema projectors using SXRD™ technology in China, Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea and Hong Kong from 2004 to 2005.
•Instant import of data drives – allows instant transfer of data drives (i.e. HDD) from one SA-2100 to another, making it possible to move a movie quickly from one screen to another. The entire movie (data) transfer process can be completed within a few minutes.
•Instant playback from any CRU drive on the SA-2100A for emergency – allows content received on a CRU Dataport drive to play back directly from the drive without ingesting. This is useful in emergency situations where the theatre receives content at the last minute.
•Instant playback of content held on the GDC TMS (Theatre Management System) for emergency – allows content residing on the TMS to play back directly through streaming from the TMS without ingesting at the screen server.
•Built-in RealD’s 3D EQ (aka ‘ghostbuster’) technology – RealD’s 3D EQ technology augments the separation of the left and right eye images, providing the best 3D visual experience.
•Closed Captioning capability – facilitates greater access to motion pictures by displaying closed captions from DCPs on WGBH’s Rear Window Captioning devices.
Having such an extensible 4k architecture allows GDC customers to be confident that they have a future-proof product. Customers will also have peace of mind to know that GDC’s existing range of servers will continue to work in full compatibility with 4K DLP Cinema® projectors when they become available.

Digital cinema - The ticket to low cost, high quality and thwarted pirates (CHINA)

GOING to the movies costs a lot in China because there are so few screens - just around 4,000. But expanding cheap digital cinema will bring down prices. Xu Wei buys a ticket. Over the past four years, the sale of half-price tickets on Tuesdays by all city cinemas has delighted moviegoers.

Tuesday screenings, of course, are packed for blockbusters like "Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen" and "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince."

Last Tuesday when Kevin Yang, an IT supervisor, and his girlfriend rushed to a downtown cinema at 6pm to see "Transformers 2," they were out of luck. The next available screening was after 10pm.

They gave it a pass since they needed to get up early for work the next morning.

"We postponed it until an early weekend morning when tickets are half price," he says. Before noon many cinemas also sell reduced-price tickets.

Tickets for big films like "Transformers 2" costs 100 yuan (US$14.7) at most cinemas, a lot for many moderate-income people like Yang. That means the cost of a date is more than 300 yuan, including eating out and transport.

In the United States last year, the average movie ticket cost US$7.18.

A recent survey by the Chinese film industry shows that spending on movies represents 5 percent of a person's monthly salary. That's higher than in the US and South Korea.

The high cost of tickets in China is determined by the market.

Compared with the 40,000 or so screens in the States, China has only about 4,000, according to Lin.

"The small number of screens can't satisfy the demands of a large population," he says. Just as cell phone and computer prices fell when output increased, ticket prices will fall when there are more theaters and economies of scale, he observers.

The price is lower both because the theater is more distant and the digital technology is cheaper.

Though many Chinese moviegoers have little idea about digital cinema and can hardly tell it from standard one, developing digital cinema is a big trend worldwide.

In 2008 there were 8,614 digital screens worldwide, 33 percent more than in 2007, according to entgroup.cn.

China has around 800 digital cinemas, ranking second after the US that has 5,474.

The Chinese government is encouraging domestic cinema chains to adopt digital cinema.

The National Film Supervisory Bureau under the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) gives financial support to new digital cinemas. The plan is to expand it to small and medium-sized cities as well as major urban centers.

The state-owned Shanghai United Cinema Lines, the city's largest chain, is rapidly developing digital capacity. By the end of this year it plans to have 160-190 screens.

Digital cinemas are also good news for young film makers.

Lin, from Dadi Digital Cinemas, says that distributors for low-budget films usually can't afford to develop several hundred traditional Data-Transmission System (DTS) film copies around the country.

"But with the increasing number of digital screens, their dream to promote films at major theaters will come true," he says. "Going digital can also drive diversity in Chinese cinemas."

According to film professor Gu Xiaoming from Fudan University, the rapid development of digital cinemas will give movie theaters new functions.

"Besides movie screenings, cinemas can also provide digital projection of a live broadcast of a performance, a game or other events," Professor Gu says. "Many Western theaters can also reap big profits from acting as a meeting room or a 3G product demonstration center."

Experts suggest that theaters offer lower ticket prices for second runs of popular films and for less-desirable seats closer to the screen.

P&M Group, promoted by filmmaker Prakash Jha and Adlabs’ Manmohan Shetty, is all set to launch Maurya TV in Orissa, Jharkhand and Bihar in the next two months. P&M will also launch Digital Cinema Multiplex chain, malls and family entertainment centres. The Group has appointed Rajiv Mishra as CEO. Mishra moves from CineMaya Media Group Inc, where he has been Senior VP. Monday will be his last day with the CineMaya Group.

Maurya TV has been planned as a news and current affairs channel with stress on infotainment. The Group has got the infrastructure in place for the launch of the channel and has also received Government permission for the same. The Group plans to have a 360 degree campaign to support the launch of Maurya TV.

Confirming the development, Mishra said, “The promoters of P&M (Prakash Jha and Manmohan Shetty) are themselves well-known brands, and I see a good future at P&M Group. With the launch of Maurya TV, Digital Cinema Multiplex Chain, Malls and Family Entertainment Centres in Orissa, Jharkhand and Bihar, we do have the first mover’s advantage, nevertheless my job will certainly be a challenging one and I am looking forward to it.”

GDC Technology first to complete integration of RealD’s 3D EQ

GDC Technology (GDC), a world leading digital cinema solution provider, and RealD, the global leader in 3D cinema technology, are pleased to announce the completion of integration of RealD’s 3D EQ (aka ‘ghostbuster’) technology in GDC’s line of SA-2100 digital cinema servers.

RealD’s 3D EQ technology augments the separation of the left and right eye images, providing the best 3D visual experience. In the past, this unique process was incorporated into the master print by the studios; GDC’s new server incorporates 3D EQ technology into the digital cinema server and therefore abridges the distribution process without sacrificing the optimal 3D visual experience.

GDC licensed RealD’s 3D EQ in January 2009 and completed the integration of RealD’s proprietary 3D EQ technology into GDC’s SA-2100 digital cinema server in less than 3 months. GDC’s servers were also validated by RealD’s laboratory ensuring a single 3D DCP format can be used without making a different DCP for RealD’s 3D equipped cinemas for optimal 3D visual experience.

GDC has decided that all existing GDC SA-2100 line of servers will get RealD’s 3D EQ feature in the next software upgrade, and servers shipped from May 1st 2009 will have this feature built-in. It is expected that GDC’s server with 3D EQ will significantly save the movie distributors millions of dollars by adopting DCI requirement of a single 3D DCP format for digital cinema distribution.

Closed Captioning Capabilities added to GDC-SA-2100 Digital Cinema Server

As part of its on-going product improvement effort, GDC Technology (“GDC”) is pleased to announce that it has added Closed Captioning capabilities to its SA-2100 family of digital cinema servers. This will benefit cinema patrons who are hearing impaired as they can now read the captions individually (using specially designed equipment available on individual seats) while watching the movie at the same time.

Unlike open captioning where text is permanently visible which can be intrusive to the viewing audience, closed captioning allows individual caption-reading. This means others seated alongside do not watch, or even see, the captions. GDC has adopted the WGBH Rear Window Captioning System to display the caption. The adopted system is in full compliance of SMPTE 428-10 and SMPTE 429-12 standards. All GDC SA-2100 servers now accept digital content in the form of Digital Cinema Packages which include closed captions.

In addition, NATO is working towards a standard interface for the digital cinema player so that 3rd party closed caption system can simply plug in without modification. The goal is to incorporate these new standards in digital cinema systems by early 2009, along with the DCI-mandated improvements currently scheduled.”

Barco to further strengthen technology leadership in digital cinema

Barco is pleased to announce a new range of DLP Cinema® based digital cinema projectors. From next year onwards the company will market a full range of 2K and 4K-ready projectors, meeting the needs of small and large screen theater owners at the lowest cost of ownership. Last week Cinemark Holdings, Inc. and Barco already announced an exclusive partnership, closing the first deal ever for enhanced DLP Cinema® 4K digital projectors, reconfirming Barco's pioneering position in the digital cinema market.

Barco introduced its first DLP Cinema® projector more than 10 years ago and has been the industry's technology pioneer since then.

From next year onwards, Barco's family of digital projectors will be complemented with 4K-ready projection. Barco will continue to invest in 2K projection and will at the same time also develop 4K solutions. Based upon the DLP® technology, these 2K and 4K projectors will feature typical Barco differentiators like modular design for ease of maintenance, high brightness for perfect 3D image quality and the lowest total cost of ownership.

Christie launches Network Operations Center for remote monitoring

A significant milestone in digital cinema’s progress was reached on April 23, as Christie Digital Systems USA, a leader in cinema projection, officially launched their new Network Operations Center (NOC) at their impressive new facility in Cypress, Calif.

The new NOC, which could easily be mistaken for the master control for a Mars landing, is housed in a state-of-the-art building within walking distance of the Christie factory. The facility occupies 16,000 square feet on two levels. The centerpiece of the facility, the command center, is dominated by a large display wall composed of Christie DLP® projection cubes. The command center can be staffed by a team of up to 17 trained specialists, who constantly monitor the real-time performance of customer installations across the U.S.

The NOC opening is the latest step Christie has taken in expanding their Managed Services Division, which is comprised of over 180 cinema audio/video and IT experts who are trained to support a wide array of systems. These systems typically contain projectors, visual displays, servers, switches and networking products across the U.S. and Canada. The Christie Managed Services Division with its original NOC was created in 2003 to support the early phase-one digital-cinema deployments. The first NOC was seamlessly transitioned to this new expanded facility this spring.

Christie’s NOC allows remote monitoring of the health and status of customer systems. It also manages the configuration of systems, provides help-desk services to customer staff, and access to local technicians with local parts to provide on-site repair and support.” In addition to the command center, the building houses system integration spaces, dedicated training rooms, and climate-controlled rooms built to industry standards for data and connectivity as well as power redundancy to maintain 24/7 readiness.

The Christie NOC is scalable to serve the cinema and related industries as they grow. Today, the NOC is providing monitoring for over 32,000 digital devices located in 3,780 digital cinema screens and 4,700 pre-show advertising screens in over 850 sites across the U.S. and Canada. Their current customers include: AMC, Carmike Cinemas, Cinedigm, Cinemark, Emagine Entertainment, Galaxy Theatres, Rave Motion Pictures, RealD, Regal, Pixar Animation and Skywalker Sound, to name a few. As the number of digital installations grows, the NOC can be expanded by up to five times the current load, which would be enough to accommodate every cinema in North America.

The NOC can support any device or application that can be accessed via a network, and is not limited to Christie products. Christie’s Managed Services Division is completely hardware-agnostic and support services are provided to customers with a wide range of digital-cinema hardware, including competitive products. Christie’s experience has shown that remote monitoring has clear cost benefits by reducing the need for on-site support.
Through the NOC, updates can be remotely administered and nearly 40% of all reported problems have been resolved without the need for on-site technical response. Service contracts are completely customizable to help customers choose the level of service and response time that is right for their application and budget.

Regarding the international market, Christie plans to leverage their NOC investment through similarly equipped branch facilities around the world, all connected back to the Cypress, Calif. master NOC. James explains, “Because we’ve built the core here in Cypress, initial start-up costs for future facilities will be much less.”

Sony Electronics Expands Digital Cinema Deployment Agreement With Sony Pictures to Cover Asia

Sony Pictures Releasing International Corporation (SPRI) has entered into an agreement with Sony Electronics' Digital Cinema Solutions and Services (DCSS) group for 4K DCI-compliant digital cinema deployments in Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Singapore and Taiwan. SPRI is an international motion picture distribution arm of Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE).

SPE and DCSS previously announced plans to work together in the deployment of digital cinema projection systems in Europe and North America. This announcement will now provide exhibitors in major parts of Asia with operational and financial resources needed to implement Sony Electronics' DCI-compliant 4K SXRD(TM) projection technology. DCSS has already entered into agreements with four major studios -- Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Twentieth Century Fox, and Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International - for deployments in the United States and Canada. DCSS now has agreements with two major studios for Asia - Sony Pictures Entertainment and Twentieth Century Fox.

Sony Electronics' 4K digital projection technology will provide exhibitors and distributors with technology that will make it possible to offer consumers a wider selection of programming choices including 3-D and alternative content. To support this digital deployment effort, SPRI will supply its upcoming releases, when booked, in digital form; and provide financial contributions for a limited time to promote DCI-compliant technology.

"As we move toward an all-digital future, exhibitors are going to need the product, resources, and marketing support of companies like Sony Electronics and its Digital Cinema Solutions and Services group, in order to offer their customers the most compelling state-of-the-art cinema experience available today," said Mark Zucker, President, Sony Pictures Releasing International Corporation.

The DCSS group was formed to provide turn-key solutions for exhibitors that will enable them to efficiently convert their operations to digital technology.

"The growth of digital cinema is a worldwide technological reality, so it makes sense that any agreement covers the broadest reach possible," said Mike Fidler, Senior Vice President of Sony Electronics' Digital Cinema Solutions and Services Group. "We're extremely pleased to be working with SPRI on our expanded joint efforts."

In addition to digital projection system deployment, Sony Electronics' DCSS group offers installation, maintenance, and support services. The group also works with exhibitors on the deployment of alternative content - including gaming, sporting events and music concerts - in order to develop more revenue-generating opportunities as the industry transitions to digital delivery.

GDC integrates RealD 'ghostbuster' technology into d-cinema servers

GDC Technology and RealD announced the completion of integration of RealD’s 3D EQ (aka “ghostbuster”) technology in GDC’s line of SA-2100 digital-cinema servers.

RealD’s 3D EQ technology augments the separation of the left and right-eye images. In the past, this process was incorporated into the master print by the studios; GDC’s new server incorporates the technology into the digital-cinema server and therefore abridges the distribution process.

GDC licensed RealD’s 3D EQ in January 2009 and completed the integration of the proprietary 3D technology into GDC’s SA-2100 digital-cinema server in less than three months. GDC’s servers were also validated by RealD’s laboratory to ensure that a single 3D DCP format can be used without making a different DCP for RealD’s 3D-equipped cinemas.

GDC has decided that all existing GDC SA-2100 servers will get RealD’s 3D EQ feature in the next software upgrade, and servers shipped from May 1, 2009 will have this feature built in.

Oracle buys Sun; Now owns Java; Becomes a hardware player

Oracle said Monday that it will buy Sun Microsystems for $9.50 a share in cash, or about $5.6 billion excluding debt, in a deal that plunges Larry Ellison & Co. into the hardware market. The company added that the acquisition of Java “is the most important software Oracle has ever acquired.”

With the move- valued at $7.4 billion including Sun’s debt - Oracle also becomes a full-fledged hardware player. Oracle has been dabbling with the storage appliance with HP, but the acquisition of Sun puts the company in an entirely different realm. Oracle and Sun have been long-time partners.

On a conference call with analysts, Ellison said that Oracle’s acquisitions to date have been market leaders - PeopleSoft, Hyperion and Siebel. With Sun, Oracle said Java and Solaris are the keepers in the deal.

“More Oracle databases run on the Solaris Sparc than any other system,” said Ellison, noting Linux was second. “We’ll engineer the Oracle database and Solaris operating system together. With Sun we can make all components of the IT stack integrated and work well.”

Regarding Java, Ellison said it wanted Sun so it could own the building blocks for its middleware. Oracle’s middleware is built on Java and the applications giant said it will continue to invest in the software.

GDC announces deployment of 99 servers into Premiere Cinemas with Barco

GDC Technology (“GDC”) is pleased to announce that it has won a major deployment contract in the U.S. in partnership with Barco. The project will see the deployment of 99 servers into seven Premiere Cinemas from Texas to Florida, with Barco taking up the role as the primary system integrator and projector supplier.

GDC’s best-selling SA-2100 server has been included in the approved digital equipment list of Cinedigm (formerly AccessIT) since 2008, and this project is special to Cinedigm in that it is Cinedigm’s first deployment project in 2009, against a backdrop of less-than-rosy world economy. The signing of the contract marks the culmination of rounds of negotiation and months of rigorous testing carried out on seven GDC servers in Premiere Cinemas, Orlando since October 2008. All seven GDC servers came through with flying colors, passing all operational tests without a hitch.

Texas-based Premiere Cinema Corp. is one of the largest independent theatre circuits in the U.S., operating theatres in the southern-eastern states of Texas, Florida, Alabama. “Premiere chose GDC servers from the approved Cinedigm equipment list over other servers because of its advanced features, superior reliability, and first class customer service,” said Gary Moore, CEO of Premiere Cinemas. “GDC has a proven track record outside the U.S. but may be lesser known here. However after our rigorous in-house tests on their servers and working with their support team, we were convinced that GDC was the right choice for us.”

“Barco is delighted to be the chosen partner of Cinedigm in its phase II program in which Premiere Cinemas is a participant,” said Barco Vice President Digital Cinema, Todd Hoddick. “The fact that Premiere Cinemas has chosen GDC servers for its roll out program is also good news to us as we have worked closely with GDC in numerous projects before; we are happy to work with such a trusted partner on yet another major project.”

GDC has been providing exhibitors worldwide with advanced digital cinema solutions and Premiere Cinemas is its first large scale deployment in the U.S. “This deal is a breakthrough for GDC,” said Dr. Man-Nang CHONG, founder and CEO of GDC Technology. “The significance goes beyond GDC clinching its first major deal in the U.S. backed by a Hollywood VPF agreement; the wider implication is GDC products have now won recognition and acceptance by the U.S. exhibitors.”

Dolby 3D Digital Cinema Delivers Large-Screen Capabilities

Dolby Laboratories, Inc., announced at ShoWest 2009 that exhibitors will now have the ability to play back content using Dolby(R: 29.21, 0, 0%) 3D Digital Cinema to provide a premium viewing experience in their largest auditoriums.

By implementing Dolby 3D for large screens, exhibitors can project Dolby 3D onto screens ranging from 41 to 70 feet. The new Dolby 3D large-screen solution is compatible with all of Barco's digital cinema twin-projector offerings, including the ultra-bright DP-3000 flagship projectors.

"This is a milestone for Dolby 3D projection capabilities, as screen size has to date been limited to accommodate a range of up to 40-42 feet," stated Page Haun, Senior Director, Cinema Marketing, Dolby Laboratories. "Dolby realizes that exhibitors need the flexibility to provide 3D in their largest and smallest auditoriums, and with this announcement, Dolby is now able to support exhibitors' various needs."

"Exhibitors have told us they want 3D without compromise. No excuses, no compromises, simply the right amount of light and a consistently beautiful image for screen sizes reaching all the way up to 70 feet," said Wim Buyens, Vice President Digital Cinema for Barco's Media and Entertainment Division. "With Barco's twin-projector offering and Dolby 3D for large screens, exhibitors can now move 3D audiences into their largest auditoriums to maximize 3D revenues."

Malco Theatres, the first to test Dolby 3D for large screens, recently used the solution to screen Walt Disney Pictures' Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience at its Malco Paradiso multiplex in Memphis, TN, and Malco Grandview in Madison, MS.

"Dolby continues to assist exhibitors by developing new ways to make the cinemagoing experience more immersive and this collaboration effort with Barco will help to bring 3D to the next level," said Mike Thomson, Vice President Operations and Technology, Malco Theatres. "The ability to play back Dolby 3D on our largest screens has been very successful."

In addition, Dolby's unique full-spectrum color-filter technology, enabled by the high-tech passive Dolby 3D Glasses, enhances the motion picture experience. The Dolby 3D system provides realistic color reproduction and extremely sharp images. The environmentally friendly and reusable glasses can be used repeatedly, significantly reducing the cost per viewing for exhibitors.

In a move that will accelerate the conversion of cinemas in Asia to digital technology, GDC has reached a non-exclusive agreement with another Hollywood Studio for digital cinema deployment across Asia.

Under this agreement, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International (“WDSMPI”) will join other major Hollywood studios in committing to supply Asian exhibitors with feature film content digitally, as well as to make financial contributions for a limited period of time towards the hardware cost of DCI-compliant digital cinema equipment deployed by GDC. Phase 1 of the program covers up to 6,000 screens in various countries throughout Asia. Along with its current roll-out in China, this milestone signals GDC’s on-going commitment to Asian exhibitors as a trusted partner in digital conversion. GDC is currently setting its sights on a Phase 2 program, which will cover even more Asian countries.

The conversion of cinemas in Asia to digital technology will enable exhibitors to reap substantial benefits of digital cinema: high quality non-degradable prints and new programming opportunities, such as premium digital 3D films, alternative content and live satellite events.

DTS Digital Cinema and Qube Cinema Form Sales and Marketing Alliance

LAS VEGAS, Mar 30, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) ----DTS Digital Cinema and Qube Cinema have announced a co-branding strategic alliance to develop and market numerous digital cinema products including a digital cinema server, a theatre management system, an enhanced digital cinema mastering solution and other allied products. The alliance will bring together the best of both companies' strengths to form a strong commercial and technology presence in the digital cinema marketplace.

Qube will bring to the relationship their experience of having developed cutting edge digital cinema products such as the Qube XP-D digital cinema server, QubeMaster Pro encoding suite and the QubeCast media delivery system. Besides providing sales and marketing presence and expertise in many regions around the world, DTS Digital Cinema will lend the partnership experience in developing motion picture technology, such as 5.1 digital surround sound, as well as the content management software knowledge that helped develop their Theatre Management System, Satellite Delivery System and Digital Booking System. Together the two companies will develop numerous digital cinema products, starting with the DTS Digital Cinema DC-20 powered by Qube, a digital cinema server that meets DCI specifications and will be on display at ShoWest 2009.

"The strategic alliance between Qube and DTS Digital Cinema will enable us to bring innovative digital cinema products to market much faster," said Chris Thomas, CEO and President of DTS Digital Cinema, acquired from DTS Inc. in May 2008. "I can think of no better company to be forming a relationship with than Qube, which has continuously excelled at developing some of the most technologically advanced products in our market at incredibly attractive price points."

Thomas added, "As the transition accelerates from 35 mm film to digital cinema products and systems, our ambition is to replace the historic DTS cinema audio systems currently present on 33,000 screens worldwide."

"In 1993, when DTS launched a pioneering 5.1 surround system that revolutionized digital sound in cinema, the market was primarily focused on North America and Western Europe; that has changed. Today and tomorrow's markets are global, with exciting growth opportunities in all parts of the world from India to the Far East and China. The decision to put in place a strategic alliance to develop and co-brand products and software solutions reflects this shift in the cinema market."

DTS Digital Cinema will rely on their vast dealer network and sales offices to market and deploy the co-branded digital cinema products. The DTS DC-20 digital cinema server, powered by Qube, will be available for purchase in April 2009.

"We are delighted to enter into this strategic alliance with DTS Digital Cinema and believe that it will bring to the theater owner a comprehensive, cost-effective and dependable digital cinema experience. We have great respect for the pioneering work of DTS in digital cinema sound and are confident that this alliance will be much more than the sum of its parts and bring fantastic benefits to the industry," said Rajesh Ramachandran, President and CTO of Qube Cinema, Inc.

The standards compliant DTS DC-20 digital cinema server, powered by Qube, is multi-format and supports JPEG2000, MPEG-2, Windows Media 9, optionally H.264 and other picture formats, all seamlessly within the same Show, thus making it the ideal choice for integrated feature and pre-show playback. It features a Remote Panel with familiar transport and menu controls for projectionist control and a powerful web-based interface for more advanced functionality over any IP network. An integrated CRU DataPort(TM: 63.61, 0, 0%) receiver makes ingest of content fast and easy while front-panel e-SATA and USB-2 interfaces make interconnections much more convenient.

The QubeMaster Pro is a uniquely flexible and powerful Digital Cinema encoding and packaging solution designed to integrate fully into the modern post environment. It is a database-driven, fully software based solution for the Microsoft Windows(TM: 63.61, 0, 0%) platform. Highly optimized for today's high performance CPUs, it is the fastest digital cinema mastering system in the market. QubeMaster Pro has an intuitive and familiar user interface that allows for the one-step pre-processing, encoding, encryption and MXF wrapping of Digital Cinema Packages (DCPs). Qube will integrate DTS Digital Cinema's proprietary JPEG2000 variable bit rate encoding algorithm into the product to enable users to create vivid DCPs with much smaller file sizes.

A formal management structure with members from both companies has been put into place to oversee the strategic alliance on an ongoing basis. Additional co-branded product offerings to be developed under the partnership agreement are expected to be released by the second quarter of 2009.
